In the United States, 900,000 hip and knee replacement surgeries are performed every year, replacing damaged cartilage with metal or plastic components to minimize pain from arthritis. Usually, this requires patients to spend up to five nights recovering in a hospital. However, with advances in minimally invasive techniques, targeted anesthesia, rehabilitative protocol, and computer navigation, this type of surgery has become possible on an outpatient basis. Incisions are smaller, leading to less tissue damage, and pain can now be better controlled — patients are able to return home earlier and potentially have fewer complications, improved outcomes, and increased satisfaction overall.
ProOrtho has developed a screening system to help determine if patients are good candidates for outpatient knee or hip replacement surgery. To ensure that the overall experience is as easy and satisfying as possible for each person, we place an eligible patient in a rapid rehab protocol. By meeting with a physical therapist prior to surgery, patients and their families know what to expect upon returning home.
